David A. Kyle

As one of the most illustrious figures in science fiction, there is scarcely an area of the field that has not seen the influence of David Kyle. Writer, anthologist, illustrator, book designer, editor, agent and an active force in both the earliest and the present day worlds of fandom, he is a true Renaissance Man.

His career outside of the science fiction world is just as impressive: graduate of Columbia University, student at the Middle Temple Inn of Court in London and retired U. S. Air Force lieutenant colonel. He has had a long career in newspaper publishing and radio and founded Gnome Press in 1948. Gnome introduced such writers as Arthur C. Clarke, Robert Howard and Isaac Asimov in hardcover.

Kyle's activities in fandom go back to the literal beginning. He founded the first convention in Philadelphia in 1936, attended the first World Science Fiction Convention (WorldCon) in New York City in 1939, chaired the 14th WorldCon in 1956 and has been recognized as a record attendee of World Science Fiction Conventions.

His works include A Pictorial History of Science Fiction, The Illustrated Book of Science Fiction and a Lensman trilogy, an authorized continuation of the prize-winning works by E,E. 'Doc' Smith.

He has collected an array of honors-Science Fiction Hall of Fame, given by First Fandom; a special award from the British Science Fiction Association; Outstanding Achievement from The International Society of Science Fiction, Horror and Fantasy and I-CON's own Gallun and Moskowitz Awards.

He has been chosen one of The Hundred Most Important People in Science Fiction. He was invited by the Arents Research Library of Syracuse University to contribute his David A. Kyle papers collection.
