Filker and AuthorRoberta Rogow was a filker before she knew about filk writing parodies in high school and college. She discovered Filk at the same time as she discovered Fandom, roughly about 1975, when she started going to Star Trek Conventions. Her first (admitted) filk was The Doleful Ballad, to the tune of Tom Lehrer’s The Irish Ballad, in which she killed off members of the Enterprise Crew in imaginative ways. Since then, she has writtn about Star Trek, Star Wars, Babylon Five, and many other TV shows, movies, and books. She chooses music eclectically, running the gamu from pop to folk to classical (a Meerkat duet, to Mozart!). Recently she has started writing her own tunes for a series of "cautionary tales" involing ghosts, goblins, and Things in Caves. Roberta produced a series of audio-cassettes of her filk songs, recorded by Dave Maskin, and assited by Jean Ellenbacher and Greg Baker. She was als recorded by Wail Songs and LoveSongs. These cassettes are unfortunately no longer available. However, a compilation CD, Recycled Rogow, in 2005, with cuts from some of those audio tapes, was released by Floating Filk Studios. It has since gone out of print. Roberta also has 2 CDs of new music in print:
Her lyrics can be found in her Rec-Room Rhymes, filk-zine (lyrics to filk-songs), currently there are 17 issues to date. Roberta Rogow has been writing since she could hold a pencil. She has had stories published in both science fiction and mystery anthologies. She is the author of four mystery novels in which the Reverend Mr. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (better known as Lewis Carroll) and young Dr. Arthur Conan Doyle collaborate as detectives. Her latest book, The Guilty Client, was published by Deadly Ink Press in May, 2009. She is presently reviewing juvenile mysteries in Myster Scene Magazine. Roberta has recently retired after a 37-year career as a Children’s Librarian in public libraries in New Jersey. |
