John Coker
I-CON 17 (1998) Moskowitz Award Recipient

During the past fifteen years, hundreds of John's photos and articles in the genre of Speculative Fiction have been published widely in magazines, newspapers and on book jackets. His pictures have appeared in program books for World Science Fiction Convention and World Fantasy Convention, and have been featured in such mainstream publications as The New York Times and USA Today Weekend.

John was selected in 1994 to present the 'First Fandom Hall of Fame Award' to Andre Norton. In 1997 he received the 'E. E. Evans Memorial Big Heart Award' at the World Science Fiction Convention. In 1998, John was Fan Guest of Honor at I-CON 17, and inaugural recipient of the 'Sam Moskowitz Fan Award.' That same year he published 'Days of Wonder', a memorial volume in tribute to Moskowitz and Conrad H. Ruppert. In 1998 and 1999 John was invited to accept the 'World Fantasy Convention Lifetime Achievement Award' on behalf of Andre Norton and Hugh B. Cave. John was photographer for several years for ScientiFiction (First Fandom's newsletter), and regular columnist and photographer for Tangent Magazine. Galleries of his comprehensive collection of original signed pictures of authors, artists, and fans in Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror have been displayed throughout the U.S.A.

John has been to China, Southeast Asia, Tibet and South America, attending festivals and trekking to lost cities and ancient monuments. While on a trip to Sri Lanka, he enjoyed a visit with visionary Sir Arthur C. Clarke, and the resulting photo essay was published in LOCUS (September 1999). Several quotations from the interview were selected last year for the 'Arthur C. Clarke's 2001 Science Fiction Calendar.' As a highlight of I-CON 20, John arranged and moderated a personal telephone call from Columbo, Sri Lanka for Sir Arthur to extend his '2001 greetings' to all the convention's attendees.

Last year, John was chosen to receive one of the first annual '4E Awards', presented in Hollywood by Forrest J Ackerman's Bat Pack, for contributions to Science Fiction fandom. In his spare time, John enjoys reading, writing, and playing music in Florida, where he resides with his wife Linda and cats.
