Jeff Menges was born 39 years ago, in a small seaside New Jersey town. He was raised there on Thunderbirds, Prince Valiant, and Lego. In 1977, Star Wars had a major impact on his imagination and his life. That same summer, Jeff picked up his first Michael Moorcock novel, illustrating it as he read. Heavy Metal magazine was soon to follow, and his fate was sealed there...
Jeff earned a BFA degree at Parson's School of Design in New York, attending classes as he could fit them in amongst his busy schedule of Jethro Tull concerts. (While at Art School he was often told he would ?get over? his desire to paint fantasy subjects...) He entered the commercial fantasy art market in 1987, with his first appearance in Dragon Magazine. Early projects included; Magic: The Gathering, starting in 1991, and the beginning of a long-lasting stint with The Ars Magica role-playing system. In late 1993, Jeff bacame a full-time "mercenary" (freelance) artist.
Upon entering the industry as a full-time freelancer, Jeff found that the card game market created an incredible demand for art. He rode that wave all the way to the beach, creating over 180 card images for over 20 sets or expansions. His work continues to grace role-playing products as well, and recent projects include book covers, temporary tattoos, coloring books, and editing art books for Dover Publications.
In addition to his freelance work, Jeff has experience as an Art Director and Designer. He lives on Long Island with his wife and two children. |
