Help Wanted!

Want to spend lots of time and effort working for no money at all? Then come join I-CON!

No, we don't pay in cash, but you do get satisfaction. We put on a terrific event, and it's really nice to take some of the credit for it.

It's also fun. Even when you work 200 hours for I-CON in a single weekend, it's a lot of fun. (Yes, a weekend doesn't have 200 hours. Remember, I-CON 25 is all about time travel.)

So come help us out.

The following positions are open:

  • Independent Film Programming
We need someone who can schedule the screening of all independent films at I-CON, and coordinate with the film-makers both before and during the convention. If you're interested in this position, write to film@iconsf.org.

  • PC Gaming Lab
The PC Gaming Lab Programming leader will contact game companies to get us copies of games for the convention, and during the con will be responsible for setting up the lab and keeping everything there running smoothly. Run the biggest LAN party you ever saw! To apply for this job, please write to e-gaming@iconsf.org.

  • Filksinging
The head of the Filk programming track will arrange rooms for the filkers, both on the SBU campus and at the convention hotel. You would also be responsible for arranging for any "name" filkers, helping them with their travel and lodging, and coordinating their appearances. To apply for this job, contact performances@iconsf.org.

  • Facilities
For this one, you'd be coordinating with Stony Brook University, the host site for I-CON. For that reason, an SBU student is preferred for this job. If you'd like to do it, send e-mail to ops@iconsf.org.

  • Advertising Sales
Sell advertising to both local businesses and others. If that sounds like your thing, contact marketing@iconsf.org.

  • Corporate Sponsorship
I-CON has space reserved for corporate displays. Our parent company, ICON Science Fiction, Inc., is a tax-exempt educational foundation. The head of Corporate Sponsorship will arrange for companies to have booths in our display area, and for corporate grants to ICON, and will work with corporate sponsors to meet any specific needs that larger organizations may have at the convention. Let marketing@iconsf.org know if you're interested in this one.

  • Fan Tables
Fan Tables are display areas we make available to other fannish organizations, to promote fandom in general. The Fan Tables leader will schedule tables, act as during-the-convention contact points for people who've bought space from us, and coordinate with the Dealers Room coordinators (who also handle table space). Apply for this job by writing to marketing@iconsf.org.

  • Community Relations
Our Community Relations expert will work with local (to Stony Brook University) groups, organizations, and businesses, both on-campus and off. The job includes both publicity and support/sponsorship. Local people preferred for obvious reasons. Please write to publicity@iconsf.org if you think you'd be good at this.

  • Merchandising
How would you like to stamp I-CON logos on things? If you'd like to manage our assortment of branded merchandise, from t-shirts to, um, button-down shirts (and whatever new ideas you have), write to publicity@iconsf.org.

  • Pocket Schedule Editor
The editor of the Pocket Schedule Book will be responsible primarily for layout and printing. This is a very important, high-pressure job, because the Schedule MUST be done before the convention starts, and the schedule is never, ever complete early. If you thrive under deadline pressure and know how to lay out booklets, please contact pubs@iconsf.org.
