Matthew Hawkins has been a resident of New York City for the past ten years, but originally hails from the Pacific Northwest, where he was raised on a steady diet of Transformers, Marvel comics, Canadian sketch comedy and Nintendo. Matt also developed a talent for drawing robots and hot dogs, hence the decision to move to New York to study art.
But not long after he received his degree in cartooning, Matt found himself in the world of video games, when Ubi Soft, one of the top names in the industry, enlisted him to be the head game designer of their New York studio. There he designed, developed, and consulted on several games for major gaming consoles and the internet, as well as conducted research into the future of gaming technology and trends.
Soon after Ubi Soft closed its New York studio, Matt moved onto the independent scene, and began concentrating on the web and cell phones as a platform, which lead to the formation of his very own company, PixelJump. Matt has been especially involved in titles based upon films and television properties, either as a designer or a consultant. On that end, he has thus far worked with Sony Classics, Paramount, Warner Bros, and Miramax. To his day, Matt is an active member of New York’s local game development community.
Around the same time, Matt also became involved with video game journalism. Starting with Nickelodeon Magazine as both a writer and an interviewer, Matt would later write for GMR, 1-UP MegaZine, and the Internet Archive’s video game section. Today, he's still a regular contributor to Nick Mag, as well as Gamasutra, and Insert Credit. Plus for the past two years, Matt has been both an instructor and thesis advisor at his alma mater, the School of Visual Arts, and recently began work on a book based on his course, which is an introduction to game design.
And when he has the time, Matt still likes to draw robots and hot dogs. To find out more, please visit http://www.fort90.com/. |
