Depending on the amount of performance time that is available, you will contacted by the Director of Performances so that an audition may be arranged. CD's tapes, videos, etc. may be used instead of a live audition. Please note that all such videos, CD's and tapes become the property of ICON and will not be returned to you, so please do not send your original copy.

Cabaret Performers

If you are specifically interested in performing in the Cabaret, please read the following information and then contact us at cabaret@iconsf.org to arrange an audition.

Part Saturday Night Live, part Muppet Show, the Cabaret is a two-hour, themed variety show that features a series of short acts by professional performers, local talent and I-CON’s invited guests. Each performance relates back to the overall themes of the show, Science Fiction, Fact and Fantasy. These themes can also include the following areas of interests: Anime, Comics, Filk, Films and Television, Horror and Gothic, Literature, Medieval Reenactment, Role Playing, and Science and Technology. Many of our performers are musicians, but we welcome all kinds of performing arts, including dance, skits, monologues, comedy, magic tricks, etc.

Acts are traditionally short, (approximately 3-5 minutes or the space of time needed for 1-2 songs) with time being allotted at the discretion of the Cabaret Director. Please note, that the allotted performance time must include both the set up and break down of the act. There will be a scheduled time before the beginning of the Cabaret for sound checks and other logistical details but once the show has begun it is important for all performers to be able to take and leave the stage quickly so that the next performer can begin. It is for this reason that bands are discouraged from participating in the Cabaret. Guests are given precedence when time is being allotted but the amount of available time disappears quickly so if you are interested, it is in your best interest to contact us as soon as possible.

While the Cabaret is not intended for small children, we do ask that all acts be in good taste. The show generally aims for acts that are rated approximately PG-13. If you are uncertain whether your act would be appropriate for the Cabaret because of theme, logistics and/or content, please feel free to contact us at cabaret@iconsf.org for further feedback. The Cabaret Director reserves the right to ask for an audition to determine the suitability of a proposed act. If you are asked to audition, a video, audio tape, CD or some other kind of recording can be submitted in the place of a live audition. Please note that all such videos, CD's and tapes become the property of ICON and will not be returned to you, so please do not send your original copy.

Performers should be aware that the Cabaret can (and often does) run late. If you have concerns about scheduling and/or do not feel that you can perform past a certain time of night, please contact us at cabaret@iconsf.org. to see what arrangements can be made to best suit your needs while allowing you to perform.

Filk

Filk has been called "Science Fiction Folk Music." The filk tradition began with music-lovers gathering in the evenings at science fiction conventions, sort of like a campfire sing-a-long without the fire. Like anything else touched by science fiction people, though, we had to add our own creative touch to it, until it had been perverted to the point where few could sense its humble folk origins.

Modern filkers have been known to perform practically anything that catches their fancy, including well-known tunes with new lyrics, completely original songs, instrumentals from harp to bagpipe to synthesizer, rock, and even bluegrass.

I-CON 23 was honored to host a multitude of fine performers with a wide variety of talents. The Brobdingnagian Bards, Emerald Rose, Voltaire, Aviva, X Plus 1, Sudden Death, AeroSith and a Live stage show of Rocky Horror were just the highlights. This year we hope to make it even more exciting and entertaining. Filking to folk song, dancing to depression, stand up to sarcasm and everything in between.
