General InfoOne of the best kept secrets in the gaming industry is the explosion of really good boardgames. We do not get the publicity that console games and collectible card games get. They do not have the same widespread following that RPGs have. But Boardgames have a hard-core following, and we earn it. We will have a wide assortment of games of all types, from building civilizations to tearing them down. Quick games, and games that develop over time. We will have strategy games and games that require a bit of luck. This is an area of gaming we are trying to grow at I-CON so even if you haven't played a boardgame in years, show up and play a few games. You will discover that you won't want to leave. If you are a boardgamer and want to help us grow please contact us at boardgames@iconsf.org. CCGsI-CON 23 featured not only a Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG and two Magic: the Gathering tournaments with massive player turnouts, but saw the creation of a new I-CON gaming tradition: I-CON Celebrity Poker! Con attendees had two opportunities over the run of the convention to face convention guests from various genres, such as Peter Jurassik of the sci-fi series Babylon 5 or Ghastly of Ghastly's Ghastly Webcomic, in a Texas Hold 'Em showdown. The score was kept in I-CON playmonies, and prizes were given to the top gamblers. This year, we plan for our poker tournament to make a striking return due to its immense popularity. We will also have tournaments for Magic: the Gathering as well as some other popular card games as well. Currently, we're looking for tournament directors who are sanctioned by the appropriate organization, such as the DCI. If you're qualified and want to help run a tournament at one of the biggest conventions of it's kind on the East Coast, contact ccgs@iconsf.org to make arrangements to see your favorite CCG or TCG at I-CON 24! Console GamingWe can not release the titles on all of the games that we are having a tournament for, seeing that it is a little too early. Right now where are looking for donations of equipment, and doing it a lot earlier than last year. But here is what we are trying to do with the room. Mostly we are trying to get as many scheduled tournament as possible. There will be some speciality tournaments. Those will probably have an early sign up. I also need to see if people would like a Smash Bros. speciality tournament since it is a popular title. We also want to put a shoot title tournament in the mix. As for the DDR room, the company that provides pads for us are glad to work with us, and we will have a tournament. One little problem is that I am not sure that we have the budget for rental. Sorry for all the people who want to play on a DDR machine. We also want to introduce Para Para Paradise, and have a respective tutorial on the game. Update: the DDR Tournament is set for 12:00pm on Saturday in ESS 169. The Acrade system is DDR Extreme. As for Forums..., we need to find moderators. And yes we are introducing console forums. One definite forum is a virtua fighter forum, for all people who want to look into playing in tournaments or upping their game a bit. Demo TeamUpdate: A list of demo events are now available here. Demo Team has some great events planned for I-CON 24, with more company support and some great games for you to sink your dice into. The events are still in the planning phase, but we will give you a preview of some of the great gaming to look forward too. Steve Jackson's Men In Black will be in full force at I-CON 24 bringing you favorites like Munchkin, Chez Geek, GURPS 4th edition, Ninja Burger, Illuminati, and much more. Come play in the 40 player All Flesh Must be Eaten Tourney and see who can survive the attack of the living dead. Come play in some of the finest Indie RPG's and games from wonderful local designers while they are demoed through out the weekend. Be that person who can say, "Yes I played that game when it was only a small press RPG. Come and join in the fun and play in games from Guardians of Order, Deep 7, R. Talsorian, Burning Wheel, Pinnacle, and many many more. Demo Team is also looking for a few good game masters to help run games for some of these companies. To join us contact Dregg at demoteam@iconsf.org. Electronic GamingThe Electronic Gaming track provides a host of Computer and Video Game programming. In our PC Multi-Player Game Room, you can check out a number of newly released titles, as well as finding a number of favorites from prior years, and participate in tournaments on some of the hottest titles. The Amateur Game Programming Showcase will feature the work of hobbyist and student programmers who show that you don't need a big budget to make a great game. Players of the top MMORPGs will have the opportunity to meet face-to-face at User Meets. Plus, we offer a broad array of panels on topics related to electronic gaming and the computer and video game industry, and presentations by some very special Guest Speakers. We are currently in discussions with computer game publishers regarding titles for the Game Room. The list of games being offered will be posted and updated here as information becomes available. Tournament games will be determined once we know which titles will be available in the lab. If you have questions or suggestions, please send e-mail to e_gaming@iconsf.org. We are looking for hosts for the various User Meets, and we would like to know which games you play. If you are interested in hosting, or would like to make sure we have a meet for your game, please send e-mail to e_gaming@iconsf.org. We have finalized the rules for the Amateur Game Programming Showcase and they can be found here. Gaming GuestsAgain, I-CON brings you some of the greatest names and companies in the business to run games, speak about their products and the state of the industry in provocative panels, and meet the public that they thrill with each new release. Although it is still early, we are proud to announce our first confirmed gaming guest M. Alexander Jurkat. Alex is the CEO/Editor in Chief of Eden Studios. He began his game production career freelancing for Optimus Design Systems as editor of the Battlelords of the 23rd Century RPG. Later, Alex managed New Millennium Entertainment, codesigned the Battlelords collectible card game, and edited and wrote for the Conspiracy X roleplaying line. Alex helped found Eden Studios, serving initially as Creative Director/Editor for the Conspiracy X line. Also planning to make an appearance are members of the "Forge" a group of dedicated independent game designers, and the Fuzion Alliance. Check our website and the spring newsletter for more news and updates. LARPWe have confirmed three LARPs for I-CON 24! More information available
below: LARP is an acronym that stands for Live action Role-playing and is a hobby where the participants enjoy a fully immersive experience. You may have played games involving dice and paper, or video games where you control the actions and destiny of a single character. LARP allows you to take that experience to a new level by actively controlling a character. YOU become the character. There is no mouse or controller to move, no dice to roll and what you see is very often what you get. There are Fantasy Boffer LARPs, Vampire LARPs, and Futuristic LARPS just to name a few. We are hoping to have a variety of LARPS. RPGsRoleplaying games will be awesome again this year, only bigger. Several groups will be anchoring the game room with games throughout the weekend. Individual GMs will be returning to show their talent and writing and running modules. We will have High Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Superheroic, Horror and Comedy games. Before video games, before digital special effects, this is where we all went to experiece the best and widest range of adventures. Despite all the advances in gaming tech, RPGs are still the broadest and best developed way. If you are not familiar with Roleplaying games then this will be the weekend to come and learn what all the fuss has always been about. If you are an experienced gamer then it's all about you (as many of 'you' as you can be in one weekend). If you want to run a game or two, please contact us at rpg@iconsf.org for more information. New dungeonmasters, gamemasters, storytellers and guides are always welcome. WargamingHere are some of the things that we got lined up for I-CON 24 in Wargaming. For three years fans of the Battletech universe have been asking themselves.."What is the Jihad?" We know the who, we know the
where, we even know the what's next, but we don't know the why, and we don't know the how. The suspense has built to a fever pitch,
and everyone wants the dirt, and they want it yesterday. To help whet your appetites the FanPro Commandos are proud to present
Bodyguard of Lies, a speculative Word of Blake Jihad event. In the World of Games Workshop we have a Warhammer Fantasy Tournament on Saturday and of course we have a Rouge Trader Tournament for Warhammer 40K on Sunday. Both tournaments have a maximum of 24 players and 1500-point armies. In the Classic Battletech scene, we have three FanPro Commandos running various Battletech games from the Boot Camp for beginners, to intermediate and advanced scenarios for the veteran players. Not to mention a new and popular large scale Battletech, where the player gets to use 1/48th scale model kits. From Privateer Press we present fantastic miniature gaming in Warmachine! A tournament is scheduled for Saturday afternoon. We also have a new large scale Star Trek game in which you get to play either the Federation or Klingons in a space battle using the Polaris Model kits. And of course we have our World Famous Dungeon Delve! In which you get to run pre-generated characters through a highly creative and highly dangerous dungeon using 3-D terrain donated by our friends at Dwarven Forge. Keep checking back for more info and pre registration info. See what kind of gaming we had last year at I-CON 23...
