Performers

To become an I-CON 22 Performer, please contact us at performances@iconsf.org. All acts should relate back to Science Fiction, Fact and Fantasy. Depending on the amount of performance time that is available, you will contacted by the Director of Performances so that an audition may be arranged. CD's tapes, videos, etc. may be used instead of a live audition. Please note that all such videos, CD's and tapes become the property of ICON and will not be returned to you, so please do not send your original copy.

Cabaret Performers

If you are specifically interested in performing in the Cabaret, please read the following information and then contact us at cabaret@iconsf.org to arrange an audition.
Part Saturday Night Live, part Muppet Show, the Cabaret is a two-hour, themed variety show that features a series of short acts by professional performers, local talent and I-CON’s invited guests. Each performance relates back to the overall themes of the show, Science Fiction, Fact and Fantasy. These themes can also include the following areas of interests: Anime, Comics, Filk, Films and Television, Horror and Gothic, Literature, Medieval Reenactment, Role Playing, and Science and Technology. Many of our performers are musicians, but we welcome all kinds of performing arts, including dance, skits, monologues, comedy, magic tricks, etc.

Acts are traditionally short, (approximately 3-5 minutes or the space of time needed for 1-2 songs) with time being allotted at the discretion of the Cabaret Director. Please note, that the allotted performance time must include both the set up and break down of the act. There will be a scheduled time before the beginning of the Cabaret for sound checks and other logistical details but once the show has begun it is important for all performers to be able to take and leave the stage quickly so that the next performer can begin. It is for this reason that bands are discouraged from participating in the Cabaret. Guests are given precedence when time is being allotted but the amount of available time disappears quickly so if you are interested, it is in your best interest to contact us as soon as possible.

While the Cabaret is not intended for small children, we do ask that all acts be in good taste. The show generally aims for acts that are rated approximately PG-13. If you are uncertain whether your act would be appropriate for the Cabaret because of theme, logistics and/or content, please feel free to contact us at cabaret@iconsf.org for further feedback. The Cabaret Director reserves the right to ask for an audition to determine the suitability of a proposed act. If you are asked to audition, a video, audio tape, CD or some other kind of recording can be submitted in the place of a live audition. Please note that all such videos, CD's and tapes become the property of ICON and will not be returned to you, so please do not send your original copy.

Performers should be aware that the Cabaret can (and often does) run late. If you have concerns about scheduling and/or do not feel that you can perform past a certain time of night, please contact us at cabaret@iconsf.org. to see what arrangements can be made to best suit your needs while allowing you to perform.
Filk

Filk has been called "Science Fiction Folk Music." The filk tradition began with music-lovers gathering in the evenings at science fiction conventions, sort of like a campfire sing-a-long without the fire. Like anything else touched by science fiction people, though, we had to add our own creative touch to it, until it had been perverted to the point where few could sense its humble folk origins.

Modern filkers have been known to perform practically anything that catches their fancy, including well-known tunes with new lyrics, completely original songs, instrumentals from harp to bagpipe to synthesizer, rock, and even bluegrass.

Performance Guests

The Brobdingnagian Bards (www.theBards.net)

The Brobdingnagian Bards (pronounced brAHb'ding-näg-EE-en) are The Original Celtic Renaissance. They perform a unique style of Celtic folk music that they like to call "a Renaissance in Celtic music". Ask their fans though, and they'll tell you the music is just plain "fun!" With six studio albums completed in just five years, combined with ten other compilations, singles and EPs, they've been called one of the most-productive Celtic groups around. But Andrew and Marc just love playing the music.

The Bards will be doing several 1 hour performances as well as appearing in our cabaret.

Emerald Rose (www.emeraldrose.com)

Emerald Rose is a four-man Celtic-theme folk rock band with a rich, original sound drawing from diverse influences, from Jethro Tull to the Chieftains.
Blending chorus vocals, pennywhistle, world percussion and driving guitars and bass, their music ranges from traditional jigs and reels to original folk rock and pop numbers. Many of the band's musical themes draw from Celtic myth and legend, but the style is modern, upbeat and accessible.

Emerald Rose will be doing several 1 hour performances as well as appearing in our cabaret.

Voltaire (www.voltaire.net)

Voltaire is one of those performers that occasionally defies description.
His shows are often funny, deep, dark, lighthearted and most definately gothic. Voltaire has remained a faithful and loyal guest of I-CON for several years and his concerts are always packed.

Voltaire will be performing one concert as well as spot in the cabaret.

Rocky Horror Picture Show (http://www.nycrhps.org)

An honest to god stage show. Complete with women in ripped underwear, gold lame speedos and men in far too much makeup. Bring a roll of toilet paper and some toast and come help deflower some virgins!

Aviva!

We are pleased to welcome back Aviva!  Aviva! and her students will once again be performing at ICON.

From Northport, Long Island, Aviva! has been studying and performing dance since 1988.  She has a degree in Theater Art with a foundation in ballet, modern, jazz and African dance as well as stagecraft and costuming.  Aviva! opened her dance studio in 1996.

Her numerous dance appearances include 3 annual television appearances for Fox TV's "Good Day New York!"

She co-founded & directed Troupe Fantazeya and is the founder of the Pennsic Theater for the Society of Creative Anachronism, Inc.  Aviva! is also co-owner of Halawa Designs & Imports.  She credits her inspiration to her wonderful teachers, notably the late Ibrahim Farrah, Jajouka and Morocco.

Kenny Young and The Eggplants

KENNY YOUNG and THE EGGPLANTS are an oddball semi-acoustic trio who play idiosyncratic songs about giant squirrels, scary bits of cheese, and finding Elvis in a pizza, among other important rock and roll concerns. Various attempts to describe their music have been made, but perhaps the most entertaining quote comes from the New York Times, which said that the Eggplants give eloquent voice to the multifaceted neurosis of prolonged adolescence.

The band members are: Eddie Logue, who plays various pieces of hand percussion and the electronic drum machine, Gil Shuster, who plays bass and occasionally screams and breaks things and generally misbehaves, and Kenny Young, who plays acoustic guitar and sings. All three live in New York City and, when at home, they rehearse in Kenny's apartment in Brooklyn. The songs are written by Kenny and arranged by the band.

X Plus 1

X Plus One" is a 1940s-style sci-fi radio show with a twist: it's improvised. Every laser battle, devious plan, and daring escape is made up on the spot by the quick-witted cast. The show enjoyed a long run last year at the People's Improv Theatre in Manhattan, and its cast is pleased to perform outside New York City for the first time at I-Con 23. X Plus One is Tony Carnevale, Andrew Dickerson, Rachel Korowitz, Anne Nodar, Chris Schneider, and Joe Wengert.
