I-CON prides itself on being an educational as well as entertaining convention. The Science and Technology Track helps further this reputation by bringing scientists, engineers and other experts to I-CON's members, exploring the science and technology portrayed in science-fiction and fantasy films, books, television shows and games.
As usual, we'll have a wide range of science-related discussions. A new addition will be a telescope-building workshop led by astronomer Kevin D. "doc" Conod.

John Carmack of
Armadillo
Aerospace will be here, to talk about his company's try at the X-prize
for a private space launch. You'll read about John as a founder of id
Software in the Electronic Gaming section of this newsletter. For us, he'll
also be discussing the technical issues involved in writing high-performance
video code.
Yoji Kondo PhD, a NASA physicist and astronomer, will be discussing the Kepler mission to detect extrasolar planets.
Inge
Heyer and the Space Telescope Institute's latest findings
Inge Heyer has graciously made herself available to give Hubble Space Telescope, general astronomy, and space science presentations for schools/colleges, community groups, and conventions.

Corey
Powell will be discussing his book GOD IN THE EQUATION.
Corey S. Powell is currently the news editor and executive web editor at Discover magazine. In addition to running the magazine’s news section, he edits Bob Berman’s Sky Lights column, and assigns, edits, and occasionally writes feature articles.
He started his scientific career at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, helping to build and test gamma-ray telescopes. Later he spent eight years on the Board of Editors at Scientific American, where he coordinated astronomy and physics coverage and directed the development of the magazine’s web site. His first book, God in the Equation (an exploration of the spiritual impulse in modern cosmology) was published last fall by the Free Press. And for good measure, he is an adjunct professor of science writing in NYU’s Science and Environmental Reporting Program.
His writing has appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle, New York Newsday, the Los Angeles Times, World Art, Helix, and The Forward.
Major media appearances include guest spots on CNN, MSNBC, ABC News, Fox TV, the Sci Fi Channel, BBC Radio, and the Leonard Lopate show, along with consultant work for Chedd-Angier and Big Rock Productions.
