Walter Simonson was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, and raised in the Maryland suburbs of Washington DC. He went to the Rhode Island School of Design where he majored in Illustration. While he was in art school, he became interested in the challenges of creating comic books, eventually writing and drawing a 50 page graphic story entitled THE STAR SLAMMERS for his senior degree project.
He moved to New York City in August, l972 and began drawing comic books professionally as a freelance artist. Since then, he has worked for a number of companies and drawn such characters as MANHUNTER, DR. FATE, the METAL MEN, HERCULES UNBOUND, BATMAN, the HULK, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, STAR WARS, and the X-MEN/TEEN TITANS team-up book. He has also drawn the comic book adaptations of the movies ALIEN and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND.
He began writing and drawing the adventures of THE MIGHTY THOR for Marvel Comics in 1983 and chronicled Thor's adventures for two and a half years. After turning the artwork assignment over to Sal Buscema, he continued to write THOR for another year and a half.
In November of 1986, at the III Salon del Comic in Oviedo, Spain, Simonson was awarded the 1986 Haxtur Prize as Best Writer for his work on Thor. He has since won the 1990 Haxtur as Best Artist for “The Song of Mjolnir” and the 1991 Haxtur for Best Cover for FANTASTIC FOUR 337.
During the 1990’s, Walter worked as both writer and/or artist for various companies on a number of projects,. Titles he was involved with included X-FACTOR, the AVENGERS, the FANTASTIC FOUR, ROBOCOP VS. THE TERMINATOR, CYBERFORCE, GEN-13, TARZAN vs. PREDATOR, the Image Heroes Reborn AVENGERS, a creator-owned title called the STAR SLAMMERS, the comic book adaptation of the movie, JURASSIC PARK, and a new 23 page MANHUNTER story for DC plotted by Archie Goodwin before his untimely death in 1998.
Simonson taught a graphic story telling course at the New York School of Visual Arts between 1992 and 1998.
Walter recently completed 2 years of work on the monthly series, ORION, based on Jack Kirby’s New Gods characters, for DC Comics. He is currently writing six issues of Wonder Woman and he is penciling and inking a four issue prestige series for DC Comics starring Elric of Melniboné, that is being written by the character’s creator, Michael Moorcock.
Rob Balder started his comic strip PartiallyClips (http://www.partiallyclips.com) in 2001. It was a reckless and irresponsible decision, made without regard to friends, family, global socio-political impact, or the fact that he can't draw. The comic strip medium was over 100 years old when PartiallyClips began, and most of the humor had long been mined out of it. There was no room for another lazy cat, wisecracking gamer, or wholesome nuclear family with adorable children prone to malapropisms. Rob was forced to scrounge for gags in places that others had passed over. Dark places. Uncomfortable places.
PartiallyClips proudly brings you these stringy joke scraps so that you can learn what's funny about, say, a historical colonial massacre, or a boy being eaten by a wolf, or what it is that koalas consider "better than sex."
10 weekly newspapers in major US markets now carry the strip regularly, and it has appeared in a number of other publications. But "PClips" will always be a webcomic at heart.
In 2002, Rob teamed up with Pete Abrams, creator of the insanely-popular strip Sluggy Freelance. Together they created "Get Nifty," a stand-alone card game themed around Pete's comic. The game is expected to be commercially available this year.
Sean Chen has been drawing comics professionally for nearly a decade. He began his career at Valiant Comics where for four years he drew titles such as Rai And The Future Force, Harbinger, Bloodshot and finally X-O Manowar.
Sean became known for his hyperdetailed style, superior draftsmanship and clear storytelling. After a brief stint at DC Comics he landed his big break with what would probably be the title he is most identified with, Iron Man. As part of their Heroes Return relaunch, Sean, along with writer Kurt Busiek began a memorable 3 year run beginning with issue #1 Vol. 3 A few years later he began a 2 year run on the ultra popular Wolverine series beginning with #159. Sean is currently the artist on Elektra which will debut in May.
